Aligning with their June 2 activation at six new locations, the City of Greater Sudbury is reporting on the success of automated speed enforcement in the previous six locations.
The cameras are relocated approximately every four months, and the city is reporting success in slowing traffic at their previous six locations.
Pre-camera data was collected from August to December 2024 and camera-era data was collected beginning when they became active in these locations on Jan. 29.
The before and after data showed the cameras were effective in slowing traffic in each location.
Specific numbers were as follows:
Second Avenue, Sudbury - from Scarlett Road to Bancroft Drive (Speed Limit: 50 km/h)
- Pre camera: 11 per cent of vehicles were travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 64 km/h
- During ASE: Reduced to two per cent of vehicles travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 52 km/h
Hawthorne Drive - from Barry Downe Road to Auger Avenue (Speed Limit: 40 km/h)
- Pre ASE: 14 per cent of vehicles were travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 54 km/h
- During ASE: Reduced to 0.6 per cent of vehicles travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 40 km/h
Countryside Drive - from Countryside Drive to Algonquin Road (Speed Limit: 50 km/h)
- Pre ASE: 11 per cent of vehicles were travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 50 km/h
- During ASE: Reduced to 0.2 per cent of vehicles travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 38 km/h
Loach’s Road - from Regent Street to Oriole Drive (Speed Limit: 40 km/h)
- Pre ASE: 21 per cent of vehicles were travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 57 km/h
- During ASE: Reduced to 0.5 per cent of vehicles travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 41 km/h
Notre Dame Street West - from Rayside Avenue to Marier Street (Speed Limit: 50 km/h)
- Pre ASE: 19.8 per cent of vehicles were travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 68 km/h
- During ASE: Reduced to one per cent of vehicles travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 52 km/h
Valleyview Road - from Municipal Road 80 to Fournier Drive (Speed Limit: 40 km/h)
- Pre ASE: 13 per cent of vehicles were travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 65 km/h
- During ASE: Reduced to two per cent of vehicles travelling more than 15 km/h over the limit, with an operating speed of 42 km/h
The city’s automated speed-enforcement cameras have proven effective at past locations as well, which lines up with broader reporting around the cameras’ effectiveness.
Active since March 22, 2024, the city’s six automated speed-enforcement cameras brought in a net municipal revenue of $753,003 last year, which is being spent on traffic calming efforts.
