VIDEO: Bail reform has been a long-term struggle

Premiers from all 13 provinces and territories are demanding 'immediate action' to fix Canada's bail system — but there are no simple solutions to a complex problem

Plans are in the works for a meeting of Canada's justice ministers on March 10 to discuss tougher rules for people seeking bail.

Canada's premiers are unanimously urging Ottawa to take "immediate action" to strengthen the country's bail system after the recent shooting death of an OPP officer. One of the two suspects accused of killing Const. Greg Pierzchala in December had been banned from possessing firearms and was out on bail at the time of the fatal shooting.

Toronto defence lawyer Alison Craig — who has spent plenty of time in bail court — was a recent guest on Inside the Village, a news and current affairs podcast produced by Village Media. She offered some important perspective on how the bail system works, and why certain suspects are released from jail pending trial.
