When Premier Doug Ford last shuffled his cabinet, he added an intriguing new position: Associate Minister of Housing with a mandate for attainable housing and modular homes.
Rob Flack of Elgin—Middlesex—London was named to the post.
The government has announced it's working on the development of a modular home strategy.
"This strategy includes exploring the use of a Request for Qualification process that will transparently identify and pre-qualify companies that contribute to modular housing construction on the scale Ontario needs," the province said in a news release earlier this month. "The government is also working to leverage surplus provincial lands and partnering with municipalities to leverage surplus municipal lands in order to help reduce the cost of building attainable homes, including modular homes."
This week, Flack got the ball rolling by announcing about $2 million in annual operating funding for a five-storey modular housing building in Scarborough with 57 units that are "prioritized for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness."
Meanwhile, a few modular home builders were on the lobby registry this week.
Quality Engineered Homes has engaged McMillan Vantage for "profile-raising activities and making policy recommendations to position modular home and accessory dwelling units as a made-in-Ontario solution to the attainable housing supply shortage."
And Nuvo Built has Loyalist to "encourage government to support the construction of modular housing by developing policies that make it easier and faster to build modular homes, including by speeding up the review of proposals to build modular homes."
